Meet Adam Taylor

Our team at Whitney is made up of some of the most innovative minds in the trucking industry. We had the pleasure of speaking with Adam Taylor, Director of Sales and Construction Services, to learn more about his experience and takeaways from working at Whitney Transport.

What were you looking for when you were considering joining Whitney Transport? 

I’m originally from Tampa and I was looking forward to moving back. I’ve had a long relationship with Chris Whitney both personally and professionally, and I wanted to get the experience of working for a smaller organization. I was previously a part of corporate America and was ready to go through a shift and change in company size and culture. 

 

What was most important to you during the interview process?

It was really important for me to understand the long-term vision of the company through the interview process. When I signed on with Chris, the company was less than a year old. We had to ask ourselves questions like, “How do we continue to make the business durable in its infancy?” and “How do we create a long-lasting workplace that is conducive to both personal and professional growth?

 

What do you enjoy most about working at Whitney?

I really enjoy the variety of work and the fast-paced environment at Whitney. I’m in a versatile role where I can be both in the field and in the office with customers and clients. I enjoy working at Whitney, because every week we’re evolving and developing new processes, and adding new people. We even give back to the community regularly, through our partnership with Meals on Wheels of Tampa Bay, which is important to me. I enjoy the overall tempo and I see a lot of growth potential for the organization.

How would you describe the company culture?

I think our company culture at Whitney is fun and lighthearted. We’re developing an environment that is centered around learning, personal and professional growth, as well as accountability. Accountability is evolving in the organization. We are being held accountable not only peer-to-peer but also internally and personally. We are learning how to hold each other accountable and helping each other move in the same direction to achieve the same goals.

 

What do you like most about working in the trucking industry?

We have a really diverse group of people working at the Whitney in Tampa. We have six or seven different nationalities employed with us, so there are diverse cultures and backgrounds. I am a people person. I love understanding and learning more about different people and their cultures. It’s been a lot of fun working with different backgrounds in the trucking industry and finding so many similarities.

 

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

A challenge I face in my role is that there are so many different opportunities and channels that Whitney can take as an organization. Sometimes it can be hard to narrow down and find the perfect path for the business.

 

As you’re looking to expand the Whitney sales team, what are you most excited about?

 I’ve been in sales leadership for the last seven years of my career, and it has been a lot of fun. I find it to be a rewarding role within any organization. There’s nothing more fulfilling for me than having the opportunity to lead a sales team and help individuals achieve their personal and enterprise goals. I’m looking forward to working hand in hand with the new employees and associates.

 

What types of behaviors or qualities are encouraged at Whitney?

We want the people on our team to be fun, hardworking, and open-minded. The team at Whitney exudes our core values of communication, integrity, responsibility, contribution, learning, and energy. We want everyone at Whitney to show love and respect towards one another and themselves.

Out of Whitney’s C.I.R.C.L.E. values, which is your favorite, and why?

Energy. I am a high-energy guy and I like to bring that positive energy and good vibes to the team. I think anything can be achieved with a good attitude.

 

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned at Whitney?

Coming from a more corporate setting, the biggest lesson I’ve learned is understanding how a small business can run, operate, and be equally as efficient and sophisticated as a larger, well-established organization. Working at Whitney has taught me a lot about running and operating a small business. Whitney has taught me how to create an environment that is similar, if not better than some of the larger businesses in the trucking industry.

 

How does Whitney support your career growth?

At Whitney, we have quarterly check-ins with the individual leaders in each department. Chris has created an environment within Whitney Transport where employees are always welcome to openly discuss their career opportunities. The sky’s the limit at Whitney. Every day our business evolves and we will continue to strive to create a work environment that attracts, retains, and motivates our employees. 

How does Whitney have fun in the office?

It’s the little things. At Whitney, we want a positive and encouraging atmosphere at all times, so we always have music playing in the office. Even now as everyone is working remotely, we have virtual weekly check-ins as a company and daily check-ins with other team members and leaders throughout the workday. We utilize welfare checks to keep tabs on all of our associates and see if there is anywhere we can recalibrate to work better together. 

 

What would you say to someone interested in joining Whitney?

If you are interested in joining an organization that emphasizes learning, growing, and evolving both personally and professionally, then Whitney is the place to be. There are very few organizations in the trucking industry that are keenly focused on each individual and the strengths they bring to the table. Whitney is a fast-paced organization that is focused on growth through people, processes, and technology. If anyone is interested in doing that, there’s no better place to do that than at Whitney Transport.

#WithWhitney Interview Series: Customer Mike Kane

Welcome back to our #WithWhitney Interview Series! We are interviewing our team, drivers, and customers to learn about their experience with Whitney Transport.

Meet Mike Kane

Kane is one of Whitney Transport’s customers and has been in the trucking business for eight years as a business developer for Florida Asphalt. We were able to chat with him about his experience working with Whitney and learn how our technology is changing the way he does his job for the better!

What do you like about working with Whitney Transport?

I don’t have to worry about waiting on trucks anymore. I loved using the app because I can plan my day ahead of time. I can’t lose track of my trucks. Weather can be a big issue. If we’ve got weather coming now, I can look at the app to see where the trucks are. 

What about the team do you like?

The communication is good. They try not to make it too confusing talking to too many people. I personally haven’t a experienced a day where something went wrong.

What big changes have you seen while working with Whitney Transport?

Mostly the technology and the app. I’m electronically challenged. The laptop is a big challenge for me. It’s like I’m learning all over again. I used to do everything on notepads and I still do. But it’s pretty unreliable and communication is the key in any job. The electronic communication helps with that. 

What do you like most about your experience with Whitney Transport?

Personally, I love coming to work every day and I enjoy the team that I work with. I’ve been doing this since I graduated high school; in the role I’m in now, it’s been less stressful because of Whitney Transport.

 How has the technology helped you on the job?

The app is phenomenal! It helps me do a better job because I’m already prepared for tomorrow.I know where everybody is, and I don’t have to get nervous about losing a truck. There’s been instances where a truck will leave my job and think it was time to go home. I’ll be sitting there waiting and he’s half way home and I have no material; that doesn’t happen anymore.

Tell me more about the technology.

It helps me actually track the trucks, I know the truck numbers I have. I get on the app and I know exactly where they are if they’re on the way to the plant. It takes a lot of stress off of me because I know where all the trucks are at all times.

What does Whitney Transport offer that other companies can’t?

Whitney Transport is elevating the level of service across this industry. I would have to say again, I’ve been managing the paving and the trucks for the last eight years and they’re the absolutely the most reliable.

Welcome to our #WithWhitney Interview Series! We are interviewing our team, drivers, and customers to learn about their experience with Whitney Transport.

 

Meet Ledian Yera

 

Ledian first joined Whitney Transport as an owner-operator in January 2019. At the time of this interview, Ledian was driving his truck as one of our valued owner-operators. After experiencing our values come to life in our operations, he joined the team as a Logistics & Safe Operations Specialist. Ledian owns two trucks that remain a part of our fleet.

What do you like about working with Whitney Transport?

I like that they uphold their family values. It’s one big family here; the way we work and the way we communicate with each other. That’s what I enjoy the most.

What was the most important thing for you when you were looking to join a company?

The most important thing for me was finding a company that would keep me busy. I wanted to keep both my trucks on the road, have a good steady workflow, and for the company to have good values especially integrity.

What about the team do you like?

The people are very friendly. They treat each other like family. They all work very synergistically together.

What’s your favorite part of the day as a driver?

My favorite part of my day is driving. I always thought truck driving was like an office job but you know the view out of your window changes every couple of seconds. So that’s what I enjoy.

What do you like most about your experience at Whitney Transport?

The technology we use, how we have everything electronic. We’re trying to steer away from paperwork. We’re keeping things 2019!

Tell me more about the technology.
On the app, customers and vendors track our trucks and track our loads: our routes, pick-up, and drop-off. They have visibility the whole way through. All our rates are on the app as well. When you get assigned to a load, you see your rate on there. You know what you’re going to make and you know how many loads you’re going to have that day. It gives you the ability to know what’s coming up. Before you would have to wait on a phone call and just sit there on the side of the road hoping somebody is thinking about you and is going to give you a load. Now it’s all automated. You go straight to your phone the night before and you know exactly what you’re doing the next day.
How does Whitney Transport approach safety?
Safety is number one for us. It has always been. At the start, we always talked about how safety was number one and that’s the way we uphold it today. It’s still the most important thing to us. I’m part of the Safety Committee and we meet once a month. We just got done with our second meeting. It’s been going very well! We have some good plans for the future.
Tell me more about the Safety Committee.
We talk about new systems we’re going try to get in place to prevent our safety scores from going up, specifically our CSA score and our asset score. It’s all very important to our industry to stay compliant with the DOT and for us to get everyone home safe.
What does Whitney Transport offer that other companies can’t?
Whitney Transport offers a certain peace of mind that you don’t get at other companies you know that your pay, job, and work is going be there.
What would you say to someone who is considering Whitney Transport but is still unsure?
I would say definitely make the move! I think Whitney is one of the better companies out here. There’s a lot of competition but we are doing a lot innovative of things to this industry and it’s going to take us a long way.
